How to Set Up and Use Face ID on iPhone and iPad Pro


Apple’s iPhones come with the facial recognition technology, named Face ID. This technology replaced the older Touch ID, i.e. the fingerprint scanner present in the Home button. Face ID is a robust way of securing your iPhone and iPad pro. Moreover, one just has to glance at the device to unlock it. Let’s check the process for setting up and using Face ID on iOS.

Setting up Face ID

Prior to setting up Face ID, you need to ensure that the TrueDepth camera and your face is uncovered. Face ID is created for working with eyewear and contact lenses. To get the best results, you need to place or device about on arm’s length away. It also works when the phone or tablet is approximately ten to twenty inches away from the face.

Here’s how you can set up Face ID

1.       Open the Settings app.
2.       Tap on Face ID and Passcode.
3.       When prompted, input the passcode.
4.       Hit the Set Up Face ID button.
5.       Ensure that the iPhone or iPad pro is in the portrait mode.
6.       Look directly into the device and press the Get Started button.
7.       Adjust your face to fit the frame and slowly rotate your head to fit the circular frame.
8.       Those who cannot move their head, need to go to Accessibility Options. 
9.       When the first face scan is complete, hit the Continue button.  
10.   Repeat the face scanning process once more.
11.   Hit the Done button.
12.   If no passcode is activated on the device, then you will be prompted to set one as an alternative.

Unlocking the iPhone or iPad Pro using Face ID

After setting up Face ID, you can easily unlock your device. Follow this process:

1.       Raise your device or tap on it for waking it.
2.       Keep the iPhone in Portrait mode and look directly at it.
3.       Place the iPad in front of yourself and look directly at it.
4.       Ensure that the TrueDepth camera is not covered.
5.       The screen will unlock after you swipe up.
